Biennale in line with the project ‘Translational control in Cancer European Network - TRANSLACORE’ 

Title: Cycle of Health and Cancer 

The overall health of an individual person is determined by the interplay of processes that define wellness, illness, and recovery. The balance between health and disease is delicate, with positive and negative factors influencing many aspects of a person’s overall well-being. The disease can be favoured, for example, when an individual is in contact with harmful conditions. Cancer is the best example of a disease that represents the loss of balance – starting with the smallest of changes to molecules and chemical reactions in our cells. Cancer can arise from exposure to damaging environmental conditions that cause changes in our genetic material, DNA. DNA provides the instructions for cells to grow and behave properly; however, if that information is altered, cells can become cancerous. This information change can result in abnormal forms of proteins – the molecules that drive the life of all organisms on the earth. Abnormal proteins can unhinge cellular reactions, and at the same time, negatively affect the human body and health. Proteins are molecules that are synthesized based on the genetic information stored in DNA by a process called TRANSLATION; thus, all changes in the flow of genetic information from DNA to proteins - on the level of TRANSLATION, may lead to cancer development. Achieving and maintaining health requires a combination of proactive measures, such as seeking treatment for illness and medical care in the case of cancer. To sustain a good quality of life and longevity, society is dependent on the development of innovative technologies. New cancer treatments and medicines require knowledge exchange and forging intersectional collaborations with experts from various disciplines/fields from academia, private sectors, and stakeholders to promote novel ideas and breakthrough discoveries. Ultimately, the maintenance of the proper balance in the cycle of health and cancer for humans is driven by the sustainable development of a knowledge-based society.


Translational control in Cancer European Network – TRANSLACORE

Summary: The TRANSLACORE European Action will bridge disciplines and expertise across Europe to advance an emerging field in cancer biology – translational control in cancer. It will provide a unique opportunity to understand this biological process, leading us to reconsider our view of information flow, from DNA to proteins, and how this impacts cancer. Our collective knowledge will be used to develop new anti-cancer medicines, improving the health and quality of life of those with cancer. 

Translational control plays a major role in numerous physiological processes. It defines the entire set of cellular proteins (proteome), maintains cell homeostasis, and controls cell fate (stemness, proliferation, growth, differentiation). Alterations that result in translational programming likely represent new ways that cells escape normal physiology to favour the development of cancers. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of translational control has the potential to provide innovative strategies and therapeutic avenues that will improve the management and health outcomes of patients with cancer. Currently, there is a lack of detail to describe translational control and its contribution to disease processes. TRANSLACORE Europe consists of a consortium of universities, international research institutes, biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies, and patient associations, led by scientists, clinicians, and patient advocates. By working together, TRANSLACORE will provide cutting-edge infrastructure and a world-class learning environment for broad, high-quality education in various research disciplines. By implementing collaborative and cross-disciplinary partnerships, resource pooling and knowledge sharing, this structural framework aims to achieve breakthroughs that will accelerate the transfer of academic findings to patients with cancer. TRANSLACORE Europe will help to improve cancer management therapies and to maintain a competitive environment for European research in the field of protein synthesis control. 

The ask

With TRANSLACORE’s plan to have a biennale theme of “Where Science Meets Art”, we are seeking artistic representations of the cycle of human health and disease, information flow in cells from DNA to protein and control of protein synthesis (translation). In the spirit of collaboration and knowledge exchange, we hope that these artistic expressions will help more people engage, question, and discuss how cells make protein. This process defines life and diseases like cancer.
