Orangutans are at threat of becoming extinct. When the forest disappears, the orangutan loses its source of food and its home. In Indonesia, the word orangutan translates to “people of the forest,” from “orang” meaning “people” and “hutan” meaning “forest.” The illegal trade in wildlife has long been one of the most serious threats to the conservation of endangered species throughout the world. The main threats to the survival of orangutans are loss of habitat through deforestation, palm oil plantations and illegal hunting.
