FONTARTE - a typographic, graphic design studio and independent publishing house - was established by Magdalena Frankowska and Artur Frankowski in Warsaw in 2004. This creative studio works on a range of projects, including art direction, editorial design and custom typography, for clients in the artistic and cultural fields in Poland and abroad as Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Moderna Museet Malmö, National Museum in Warsaw, 49 Nord 6 Est - Frac Lorraine in Metz, Gallery BWA Design Wrocław, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, DAAD Berlin and Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz.
Its work is distinguished by its original letterforms and unique typographic style. Magdalena and Artur are particularly interested in activities that connect art and design.
Fontarte works were exhibited in London, New York, Shanghai, Tokyo, La Paz, Seoul, New Delhi, Beijing, Milan, Istanbul, Havana and Brussels.
They also write for various publications, give lectures and curate local and international events on graphic and book design. Besides their own writings, Frankowski and Frankowska are the co-authors of a book about Henryk Berlewi, a pioneer of functional typography.
Fontarte curated several exhibitions of new Polish graphic design as: "Eye on Poland" in Shanghai, Nanjing and Bejing (2010) and Setouchi, Seoul, New Delhi (2015) and Tokyo (2016), "Enfant terrible. La nouvelle affiche polonaise" in Brussels (2013) and "CARTEL PL" in La Paz, (2013) and Santa Cruz, Bolivia (2014).
Artur Frankowski - graphic designer, typographer, type designer and lecturer. Ph.D. from the Warsaw University of Technology on legibility of type (2004). In 2013 he presented a habilitation thesis on street lettering as an inspiration for a graphic designer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Professor of typography and graphic design at the Faculty of Industrial Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He has designed or co-designed several typefaces, among them Grotesk Polski, Komunikat FA, Merz FA, Silesiana, Modernista FA, NASZ Stencil.
Author of a book "Typespotting. Warszawa" dedicated to street lettering of Warsaw (2010). Co-author (with Magdalena Frankowska) of a book about Henryk Berlewi, a pioneer of functional typography. Country delegate of ATypI. Co-founder of Fontarte.
Magdalena Frankowska - graphic designer and type designer. MA in Art History at the University of Warsaw (1997) and post-graduate degree in public relations at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (2000). Magdalena has published a number of articles on design and visual communication design in the Polish press. Co-author (with Artur Frankowski) of a book about Henryk Berlewi, a pioneer of functional typography. She also has been designing contemporary typefaces. Magdalena is an active personage in the graphic scene in Poland. She has been organizing and curating several events on international book design with guests such as Norm Studio, Irma Boom, Jost Hochuli, Gerry Leonidas and others. Magdalena was a jury member of iF Communication Design Award (2010). Member of the board of Polish Association of Graphic Designers (STGU) in 2007-2011. Co-founder of Fontarte.
